Hardeep Singh Waraich runs Waraich & Sons corner shop on Old Car Road. He is the most quoted letter-writer in the Gazette and has, so far, not won the annual letter prize, which he takes as a personal failing on the part of the judges.
On Morrowfen
Hardeep was born in Birmingham and moved to Morrowfen eleven years ago, “for the quiet”. He has found the quiet less quiet than expected, and is on the whole amused by it. He has been accepted as a Morrowfen person, by his own account, since the day he knew which way the bell of St. Within’s was facing.
On the parish
He is on excellent terms with the Mayor, who keeps the peace, and on good terms with Tom Ash, who reads his letters aloud. He is polite to Della Finch and fond of Owen Pell. He has not yet met Caspar Wren.
On the census
His current count, kept at the shop, is three hundred and twelve. He accepts that this is not a parish-wide figure, only a corner-shop one.
