Welcome to Morrowfen

A perfectly ordinary town, according to the Council.

Morrowfen is a small fenland town of about seven hundred souls, give or take, sitting on a slight rise in the middle of drained marshland. Visitors are welcome as long as they do not feed the ducks in St. Within’s churchyard.

The town has a Gazette, a Parish Council, a Drainage Committee (the more powerful of the two), a Bell & Sluice, a Halt with one platform, and a long memory. It is presently under discussion how many of us there are. The Council says seven hundred and twelve. The Drainage Committee says seven hundred and forty-three, if you count the caravan park. The Parish Clerk declines to give a figure.

From the Town Hall

Council meets on the second Tuesday of the month. The Drainage Committee meets more often. The Mayor’s role is largely ceremonial, with the small heron badge and an annual letter to the Drainage Committee on the subject of the sluice.

The Council’s 2024 figure for the population is 712. The Drainage Committee’s 2025 figure is 743. The Parish Clerk has not committed to a number. The Gazette has declined to print one. The matter is, in the local phrase, under discussion.
