Margaret Drury took the small heron badge in 2022, after three years on the Council. She had been a geography teacher at Aingersby Secondary for thirty-one years, and a resident of Morrowfen, on and off, for longer than that. She is patient, formal, occasionally sharp, and fond of a properly-kept minute.

She believes the Council’s figure of seven hundred and twelve is being undercounted, though not maliciously. She believes the Drainage Committee’s figure of seven hundred and forty-three is being overcounted, also not maliciously. She thinks the answer, when it comes, will be somewhere in between, and that the Parish Clerk knows what it is.

On the parish

Margaret is fond of Morrowfen in the careful way that one is fond of an old house. She likes that the Council still meets in the Reading Room annexe, that the bell of St. Within’s is rung by hand, and that the Gazette prints letters in full. She is quietly irritated by Mr Waraich’s letters, which she reads in full, and which she suspects are better than her own.

On the Drainage Committee

She respects Della Finch and finds her exhausting. They agree on most things, when pressed, and disagree on most things, when not pressed. Margaret thinks Della is withholding information about the Seventh Drain for political reasons. Della thinks Margaret is asking the wrong questions.

On the census

Margaret’s position, at the most recent Council meeting, was that both figures are correct “as far as they go”. She has since written, privately, to ask the Parish Clerk to prepare a reconciliation paper. The Parish Clerk has nodded.
